Alice Mae (Campbell) Smith age 96 of Plattsmouth, NE passed away peacefully on June 27, 2016 at the Nebraska Masonic Home. She was born February 7, 1920 on a farm near Murray, NE to Fred L. and Clara (Parkening) Campbell. She grew up on the farm and attended Kenosha and then Lewiston country schools and graduated from Plattsmouth High School in the class of 1938. She attended Peru College summer school and taught grades 1 through 8 at the Kenosha School for three years.
She was married to Sheldon Y. Smith on March 23, 1941 in Plattsmouth. They made their home in the Murray area and had one daughter, Carol Ann (Smith) Wehrbein. They were married 59 years at the time of Sheldon’s death. Alice was the bookkeeper for her husband in the Sheldon Smith Trucking business for 18 years. Later she also worked 10 years at Cass County Bank. She was a loving wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Alice was a longtime member of the Murray Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship, served on the elder and deacon boards, and taught Sunday School as well as leading various youth groups both in the church and the community. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Home Chapter #189 serving in several offices. She lived at the Nebraska Masonic Home for the past 11 years, enjoying and appreciating the activities, the friendships, and the wonderful care she received there.
Alice is survived by daughter: Carol Wehrbein and husband Ted of Plattsmouth; two granddaughters and spouses: Amy and Gordon Wilson of Aurora, NE and Jenny and Justin Widick of Plattsmouth; five great grandchildren: Allyson and Bethany Wilson, and Rachel, Braden, and Ashleigh Widick; brother Bill Campbell of Lincoln, sister and husband Margaret and Dan Jones of Fort Worth, TX, nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Clara Campbell, husband Sheldon Smith, brothers Donald Campbell and Kenneth Campbell.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 10:30 AM. at Murray Christian Church, Murray, NE with Rev. Mike Njus officiaiting and Norma Hammons as the organist
Pallbearers include Gordon Wilson, Justin Widick, Braden Widick, Lee Frantz, Tom Nguyen and Roy Smith
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 29th from 1 until 8 PM with the family present from 6 – 8 at the Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery
Memorials may be designated to Murray Christian Church
