David A. Meredith, "The Chief", age 78 of Nehawka, passed away on October 9, 2026. He was born on January 17, 1948, in Auburn, Nebraska, to Allyn Jack and Lillian Irene (Lyons) Meredith.
Dave graduated from Nehawka High School in 1966 and pursued his studies in history at Peru State College with plans to teach and coach. During his time at Peru, he was given the opportunity to farm, marking the beginning of a lifelong devotion to agriculture. On November 27, 1982, he was united in marriage to Sonia Kuhlman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Louisville, Nebraska. Together, they built a beautiful life, filled with love and cherished memories.
An active member of the Masonic brotherhood, Dave was Worshipful Master of Plattsmouth Masonic Lodge #6. He was also active in Chapter #189 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Dave was a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and the Tangier Shrine. He also served as the Sovereign Master for the Eastern Nebraska conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine.
Dave loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling, with memorable trips to Alaska and Cuba. He had a love for classic cars. Dave had a special affection for animals, particularly dogs. He was known for his remarkable skill as a marksman. He was also of course, a loyal fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Dave is survived by his wife, Sonia (Kuhlman) Meredith of Nehawka, NE; his son, John (Becci) Meredith of Nehawka, NE; his daughter, Miranda (Tracey) Wistrom of Prairie Village, KS, grandchildren, David Meredith, Luke (Jennifer) Meredith, Seth Meredith, Hank Wistrom and Della Wistrom, his brother, Bob (JoAnn) Meredith of Mission Viejo, CA; his sister, Jackie (Mark Smith) McClane of Plattsmouth, NE; his brother-in-law, Steve (Sandi) Kuhlman of Athol, KS ; and his sister-in-law, Audrey (Kyle) Swisher of Manhattan, KS. Dave is also survived by numerous other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Allyn Jack (Mildred Schleiger) Meredith and mother Irene Meredith.
Visitation will take place at Brian P. Harvey Funeral Home in Plattsmouth on October 13, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with family greeting friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A funeral and Masonic service will be held at First Congregational Church in Weeping Water on October 14, 2026, at 10:30 AM with Pastor Chris Abbott officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in rural Nehawka, Nebraska following the luncheon.
Memorials may be directed to the 4H Program at the Eastern Star Home for children in Fremont, Nebraska, the Nebraska Humane Society, or the Weeping Water United Methodist Church.
