Elizabeth “Liz” A. (Matney) Holman, 91, of Plattsmouth, passed away Tuesday, September 26 at the Masonic Home, surrounded by family. Liz was born August 25, 1932, in Onawa, Iowa, the youngest of five children, to James and Mary (Brehm) Matney. She was a 1951 graduate of Plattsmouth High School. Liz and Donald Holman of Hamburg, Iowa, were married on March 24, 1951, in Farragut, Iowa. Together they had three daughters: Sandra, Linda, and Teresa.
Liz and Don spent most of their life together traveling. Don’s career with Pentzien required them to travel the nation installing underwater pipelines, but Plattsmouth was always their home base. After all three girls were in school, they accompanied Don in the summers, experiencing many different cultures and adventures from Utah to Indiana and Minnesota to Louisiana. Whether for work or leisure, Liz and Don would visit all 50 states and several foreign countries.
When not on a job site, Liz kept everyone active in school, Campfire Girls, music lessons, swimming, and softball. Liz was a room mother for school parties and float builder every year. As a band parent, she made lots of pies, and even more yumburgers. Liz showcased her talents as a seamstress making dresses for school dances, and costumes for cheerleading and baton twirling. She loved cheering the band on at parades, half time, and competitions.
When Don took a job with the city of Plattsmouth, Liz became the owner and operator of the Avenue Bar. Liz brought Don in for clean up and the occasional bar tending and bouncer duties. When the bar was sold and Don returned to Pentzien, Liz took a job with the company as well, becoming a field office manager. This allowed her to work on many of Don’s projects. After both retired, they decided to begin wintering in Arizona, which they did for ten years. Liz was thankful for the 62 years she had with Don. She was a dedicated supporter of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Liz enjoyed playing golf and watching baseball, particularly the Kansas City Royals. In her spare time, you could find her with a good book or with a paint brush in her hand. She was an active member of the F.O.E. #365, the United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of the Plattsmouth Alumni Association. After reconnecting at a class reunion, Liz and Art Newburn enjoyed life and companionship, together for the later part of her life.
Family and friends held a special place in Liz’s heart, and her presence will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughters, Sandy (Dr. Jim) McKnight, Plattsmouth, NE; Linda (Rob) Brown, Elkhorn, NE; Teresa Hobbs, Lincoln, NE, seven grandchildren: Rev. Debra (Mike Ramsey) McKnight, Heather(Andrew) Norris, Nancy (Jon O Kirk, Dr. Doug (Michelle) McKnight, Michelle (Chris) Beecham, Dan (Dr. Amber) Jenkins, Greg (Camden Davis) McKnight and sixteen great grandchildren: Samantha, Alden, Clair, Lila, Skylar, Aaron, Riley, Jordan, Nick, Colton, Aubrey, Shaely, Taylor, Jordan, Peyton, and Parker, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents, and her four siblings.
Funeral services for Liz will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Plattsmouth, with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 1-8 PM, with family present to greet friends from 6 – 8 PM, at the Harvey Funeral Home in Plattsmouth.
