Floella Evers
February 8, 1926 - May 24, 2024
Floella (Scherff) Evers of Plattsmouth passed away Friday, May 24, 2024 at the age of 98. She was born February 8, 1926 to Grover C. and Effie A. (Fowler) Scherff. Flo was born and raised on a farm in Stockham, Nebraska, where she was an active worker on the farm. After graduation from high school, she attended the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, majoring in biology. As a sophomore, she pledged Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She and Raymond Evers were married in the Gamma Phi house in 1945. After her marriage, she moved to Plattsmouth where she and Ray raised their four daughters. Flo and Ray were married until Ray’s death in 2014.
Very early on, Flo developed a belief in the importance of school and independent learning. She was an avid reader with an interest in American history, specifically the Civil War era. As her children all started school, she began to finish her degree in Elementary Education. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, she started work on a Masters Degree in Reading and then went on to finish course work for a PhD in Reading Education. Flo was an active member of her Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Eastern Star, PEO, and Bridge Club.
After her marriage and move to Plattsmouth, Flo worked as a secretary for the Grand Secretary of the Nebraska Masonic Lodge. When her husband became Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent of the Nebraska Masonic Home, she was active in social events at the Masonic Home. Once her children were all full time in school, she began teaching in the Plattsmouth schools. She also was a Reading Specialist in the Millard Schools until the passing of her daughter Nancy. At that point, she retired from teaching.
Flo was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ray; daughter Nancy; parents, Grover and Effie; siblings, Louis, Lois, Norma, James, Laura, and Mae; and son-in-law, Howard Schoech. Flo is survived by her daughters, Susan Spangler (Richard) of Kansas City, Missouri, Janet Schoech of Plattsmouth, and Diane Peitzmeier (Joe) of Omaha; grandchildren, Leigh Anne Kreykes (Ryan) of Cedar Creek, Nancy McEvoy (Pete) of Bennington, Maggie Donnahoo (Dan) of Oakdale, California, and Raymond Peitzmeier (Kendra) of Bennington; great-grandchildren, Grace Kreykes of Cedar Creek, and Henry and Ella McEvoy of Bennington.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 with family greeting friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Harvey Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nebraska Masonic Home or the Alzheimer’s Association.
