Gary A. Smith age 61 of Plattsmouth passed away on November 4, 2025 at the Bellevue Medical Center. He was born on November 7, 1963, in West Covina, California, to Albert Eugene and Mary Katherine (Mumm) Smith.
Gary spent most of his life in Plattsmouth, graduating with the Class of 1982. Gary worked diligently for many years in paper distribution at the Plattsmouth Journal. For a few years, from 1990-1993, he moved to California, where he worked as a security officer at a construction site for his cousin. When back in Nebraska, he served as a custodian at Metropolitan Community College.
Gary was deeply involved in community service. He was a member of the Murray Fire Department and devoted many years to coaching girls' softball, where he imparted not only skills but also valuable life lessons to young athletes. A passionate supporter of his local teams, Gary was an avid fan of the Nebraska Huskers and the Kansas City Chiefs, often sharing his enthusiasm with friends and family. Known for his willingness to lend a helping hand, Gary exemplified the spirit of kindness and generosity. This spirit of kindness was highlighted as he played Santa often for local families, the Murray fire department, his sister Janice's daycare, and Pamida. He possessed a stubborn streak that made him uniquely memorable to all who knew him.
Gary is survived by his sisters Debra (Jim) Loring of Weslaco, TX, Geraldine (Tim) Endelicato of Plattsmouth, NE, and Janice Strong of Bellevue, NE. He also leaves behind his niece, Shelby (Kolby) Foote and nephews Jacob (Rebecca Beavers) Strong, Marty Strong, and Robert Endelicato; and great nieces and nephews, Sutton and Lyla Foote, Malachi Endelicato, and Zackariah Vittetoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Delbert and Gerald Smith and nephew, David Loring.
Anyone who knew Gary knows how much he loved the Huskers and the Chiefs. To honor him, please come dressed as he would-casual and comfortable-and show your support by wearing Nebraska Husker or Kansas City Chiefs attire.
