James Edward Modlin age 79 of South Bend, Nebraska passed away while residing in Arizona for the winter, on Sunday, January 17, 2021.  He was born on August 7, 1941 in Herman, Nebraska  to Wayne Edward and Gladys (Laursen) Modlin.

After graduating from High School, he enlisted in the United States Army serving active duty from 1959 until 1962.  He continued his service in the Army Reserves until retiring.  He was united in marriage to Nancy Lee York on September 11, 1962.  Together they raised four daughters, Connie, Janine, Susan and Gail and one son, Michael.

Outside of his military service, he worked as a salesman at Lumbermen’s in Omaha for many years.  He spent his winters in Arizona where he enjoyed the nice weather and campground friends.

He is survived by his children, Connie Karnes of LaVista, Janine (Bud) Post of Bennington, Susan (Jim) Hussey of Elkhorn, Gail (Roger) Cote of Omaha; 7 grandchildren, David Karnes, Kevin Karnes, Jessica Corrado, Paige Cote, Michael Cote, R. J. Wade, Cameron Wade; 6 great grandchildren, Drake Karnes, Liam Karnes, Marie Karnes, Jacoby Karnes, Benson Corrado, Skylar Corrado; Siblings, Jerry (Edith) Modlin of Sparks, NV, Raymond (Shirley) Modlin of Council Bluffs, IA and Larry Modlin of Fremont, NE.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; son Michael Edward Modlin; parents, Wayne Modlin and Gladys Modlin; sisters, Joyce Kallhoff, and Roselyn Modlin

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Harvey Funeral Home in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. The family will greet guests from 9:30 until 10:30 AM. Services will also be live streamed on the Harvey Funeral Home Facebook Page.  A luncheon will be held at the Bellevue Fireman’s Hall following the service.

Interment with Full Military Honors will be held later at the Omaha National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at 2:00 PM.

Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
