Jerry Wayne Carter was born on November 12, 1939, to Kenneth William (Bill) and Bertha (Kramer) Carter in Saint Edward, Nebraska. Jerry went to school from elementary through high school in St. Edward, graduating with the class of 1957.
After high school, Jerry attended college at University of Nebraska Lincoln, Hastings College, then went back to UNL studying Engineering, Agriculture, and Business, graduating in 1964. Jerry was a proud member of the AGR fraternity and enjoyed participating in alumni events. Upon graduating as a Husker, Jerry heard the call to serve our country and went to Navy OCS (officer training). Jerry was in the Navy for 3 ½ years progressing to Engineering Officer on the USS Cheboygan County. After leaving the Navy in 1968, Jerry returned to the family farming and grain elevator business, KW Carter Company, dba JW Grain.
Jerry met Lila in 1982 and they were married in 1983. With Lila, Jerry gained a bonus family consisting of three daughters and grew to include six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was loved by all and enjoyed being a fun Papa Jerry!
While Jerry was leading the family business, Jerry and Lila resided in St. Edward, frequented Beaver Lake, and wintered in Texas. After retirement, locations reversed spending more time at Beaver Lake.
Jerry was a long-time member of Legion #226, St. Edward Fire Department, Presbyterian churches in St. Edward and Murray, and Nebraska Grain and Feed Board. Jerry loved to sing and was a member of the Hastings College choir. In his spare time Jerry enjoyed, golfing, shooting hoops, fishing, swimming, driving around the country, and taking leisurely boat rides.
Jerry is survived by wife Lila Carter, bonus daughters Sherry Rohde, Joni (Jim) Meisinger, Lori Morehead (Brian Nelson), grandchildren Logan (Graci) Rohde, Carli Rhylander (Darek Hubbell), Chase Rohde, Calena (Jacob) Rudd, Larissa (Travis) Conger, and Kate (John) Eggleston; ten great grandchildren; sister Janine Carter Schafer (Von); along with nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Bertha Carter, brother Joseph William (Billy) Carter and wife Bonnie Westring, sister Judy Warner and husband Ralph, and son in law Randy Rohde.
Funeral services for Jerry will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Harvey Funeral Home Chapel in Plattsmouth, Nebraska (livestreamed on the Funeral Home Facebook Page), with Rev. Bill McConnell officiating. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service (10:00 – 11:00 AM).
Graveside Services with full military honors will be on February 13, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the Omaha National Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
