Joan E Nelson

Joan Elizabeth Nelson age 78 of Plattsmouth, Nebraska passed away on August 25, 2023, at the Prestige Care Center in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. She was born on March 8, 1945, in Huron, South Dakota to Herbert and Liza (Kilpatrick) Marston.

Joan grew up in Huron, South Dakota, where she graduated from high school.  She went on to obtain her Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Education from Huron University.  She was united in marriage to Howard A. Nelson on June 17, 1967, in Huron, South Dakota and together they raised three sons, Troy, Jamie and Jeff.

Throughout her life she had a fondness for music, which led to a career in music education. She taught elementary vocal music at Huron Public Schools, played the piano and organ for church services, sang in the church choirs, as well as sang with the Omaha Symphonic Chorus. In addition to a career in music, Joan also had a passion for Real Estate, which began in Minot North Dakota. After working with a broker to start, Joan opened her own real estate office in Stanley, North Dakota. If that weren’t enough, Howard and Joan also owned and operated a meat plant, with Joan doing all book keeping, customer service, and wrapping, which served many restaurants, hospitals, schools, stores, and customers in their community. Joan was also involved in bowling league and held positions on multiple community boards.

After moving to Nebraska, Joan kept busy working many jobs – bank teller, bookkeeper, cashier – in addition to owning her own real estate agency in Omaha. In August of 2002, she began working with NP Dodge and was really excited about the opportunities it would bring her.

She is survived by her husband, Howard Nelson of Plattsmouth, NE, sons, Troy (Sarah Jennings) Nelson of Omaha, NE, Jamie Nelson of Omaha, NE, Jeff (Rachel) Nelson of Omaha and grandson Brody Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 30, 2023, from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at Harvey Funeral Home immediately followed by graveside service at 10:00 AM at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
