Joan Katherine Solomon, age 90 of Plattsmouth, NE was born August 24, 1925 in Plattsmouth to Louis and Helen (Heil) Tiekotter and passed away September 28, 2015 at the Bellevue Medical Center. She grew up in Plattsmouth and graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the Class of 1943. Her parents were one of the founding families of First Lutheran Church where Joan was a lifelong member. She began working for the Cass County Treasurer’s office after graduation. On May 30, 1948 she married Thomas Spencer Solomon at Zion Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE. To this union were born three children Suzanne, Joe and Katherine.
After their marriage, Joan began helping her husband, Sheriff Tom Solomon, at the county jail by feeding the prisoners, washing their clothes, and handling the radio dispatch duties. While her children were in school, she was active as a room parent and was a devout band parent who would travel with the band as a sponsor on many trips. As a member of the church, she shared her voice in the choir and was a member of the Ladies Guild.
She spent countless hours working at the family businesses: Riverside Drive-In, Mom’s Café and the Barracks Steakhouse. She enjoyed travelling to various locations and some of her favorite pastimes included baking cookies and breads, collecting antiques and discovering treasures at garage sales.
Joan will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who instilled into her children and grandchildren to always be the best they could be.
She was preceded in death by parents, Louis & Helen Tiekotter, husband Tom Solomon, brother Kenneth Tiekotter, and, sisters-in-law, Lillian Schmitt, Edith Lytle, Mary Keeley Parmelee, Martha Williams, Frances Jochimsen, Vera Solomon and Elaine Tiekotter.
She is survived by her children Suzanne (Gary) Wilson, Joe (Brenda) Solomon, and Katherine Solomon, all of Plattsmouth, grandsons, Dr. Thomas “TJ” Wilson and Tony (Lyndsey) Wilson, sister-in-law Delia Danzig, five step grandchildren, four great step grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 2, 2015 at 10:30 AM. at First Lutheran Church in Plattsmouth, NE with Rev. Lloyd Stuhr officiating and Marsha Fleming as organist. Pallbearers include: Kenneth Schmitt, Bob Kern, Alan Wohlfarth, Steve Rishel, Tom Malcom and Ed Vincent.
Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015 from 4:00PM until 8:00 PM at the church with the family present from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.
