June Berneice Hostetter was born 12 June 1927 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Fred F Coates and Elizabeth (Engel) Coates. June was the 5th of 10 children in the Coates family. June graduated from Beatrice High School in 1945. She met (Cecil) Keith Hostetter at a roller skating rink in Nebraska City, NE. They were married in Marysville, KS on 1 August 1945, while Keith was on leave from the Navy. They resided on farms near Murray, NE and Lake Wa-Con-Da, NE before moving to Newton, IA and then Spencer, IA for Keith’s Archer job. June worked as a buyer in office supply stores in both Newton and Spencer. They retired to Glenwood, IA. After Keith’s death on 19 October 2009, June remained in Glenwood until her move to Louisville Assisted Living, on 2 November 2020. June passed away at 96 years old on 6 July 2023 after a short illness.
June was an avid reader, gardener, seamstress, quilter, crafter and artist. She had a teapot collection of over 300! She was a 4-H leader, a member of the American Legion, a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed lunching at the Bloom Senior Center with all of her wonderful friends. June loved playing cards, especially Rummy with her family. June enjoyed playing Bingo at the Louisville Assisted Living and (to the surprise of family) liked watching golf on TV.
June is survived by daughter, Peggy (Steve) Vallery of Plattsmouth, NE; sons, Tom (Denise) Hostetter of Pella, IA and Les (Mary) Hostetter of Colfax, IA. She has 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren (with another due in February). She is also survived by sisters, Freda Oltman and Donna Lant, both of Lincoln, NE, sisters-in-law, Claudia Coates of Houston, TX, Jan Coates of Stanton, IA and Arlene Topliff of Otoe, NE, brother, Jerry (Shirley) Shaffer of Beatrice, NE as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Nephew Roger Hostetter (Dinah) was always a brother to her children and son to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Linda Moore, daughter Wanda Keefe, son-in-law Steve Keefe, grandson Roger Moore, granddaughter Michaella Moore and great grandson Ty Moore. She was also preceded in death by her brother Lester Coates and his wife Milgene, brother Marvin Coates, brother Dale Coates, brother Tom Coates and his wife Lorraine, sister Laurine Jewell and her husband Dwight, sister Luella Gillespie and her husband Floyd, sister Carol Siebe and her husband Don, brother-in-law Lyle Hostetter and his wife Faye, brother-in-law Lewey Hostetter and his wife Jo, brother-in-law Kenney Hostetter and his wife Lucy, brother-in-law Ron Hostetter and his wife, Lorraine, brother-in-law Roy Topliff, sister-in-law Betty Campbell, sister-in-law Max Younker and her husband Don and brother-in-law Richard Oltman.
Memorials suggested to Bloom Senior Center, Glenwood, IA or St Judes’ Hospital. Graveside services will be Saturday, 2 September 2023 at 11:00 am at the Lewiston Cemetery, Murray, NE. Luncheon to follow at the Murray Christian Church, Murray, NE.
