Larry Michael Hefling, age 83, of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. Larry was born on January 18, 1942, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, to Clarence “Bud” and Helen (Stallings) Hefling.
Larry led a life marked by love, service, and dedication. After graduating from Parkersburg High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a journey of honor. Shortly after returning from basic training, he married the love of his life, Carol Ann Maxwell (later Hefling), on December 23, 1960, in Parkersburg. Larry served with distinction, including a tour in Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star, retiring after 20 years as a proud Vietnam Veteran.
While serving, Larry pursued and earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University. After retiring from the military, he dedicated 20 years to Northrop Grumman, where he proudly contributed to the team that developed the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Larry was active in his community as a former member of the Lions Club in Murray, Nebraska and the Murray Volunteer Fire Department. He had a passion for golfing, bird photography, was an avid reader, and cherished laugh-filled Thursday lunches with retired friends. Above all, Larry treasured his role as Papop to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, delighting in ice cream, donuts, and cartoons. He was our family dictionary and math expert, always quick with a joke and a smile. Sundays were dedicated to family and especially his grandkids.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carol Ann Hefling of Plattsmouth, NE; his sons: Larry (Kristie) Hefling II, of Blair, NE, Christopher Hefling of Omaha, NE, and Eric (Diana) Hefling of Maryland; his cherished grandchildren: Shawntea (Travis) Gordon, Justin Hefling, Kimber (Nick) Andersen, Alexus Hefling, Gaven Hefling, and Jazmine (Thomas) Von Tersch; and 14 great-grandchildren. Larry is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Margi Walz of California and Patty (Virgil) Beall of West Virginia.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence “Bud” and Helen Hefling, and his brother, Bill Hefling.
