Mary Kathryn Caverzagie, age 82 of Plattsmouth passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born on April 26, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska to John A. and Eleanor M. (Buzard) Sautter.

After graduating from Bellevue High School in 1962, Mary attended Peru State College where she obtained her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1966. The same year, Mary and Charles B. Caverzagie were united in marriage on June 4, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellevue, Nebraska. Mary embarked on a fulfilling career in education soon after, beginning her teaching journey in the Glenwood, Iowa Community Schools during the 1966-67 academic year, specializing in Business Education. From 1970 until her retirement in 2000, she made significant contributions to the Plattsmouth Community Schools, where she served as the Business Department Head. Her dedication to her students extended beyond the classroom; she sponsored the National Honor Society and the Yearbook, and she was the founder of the PHS Drill Team (Dance Team). In 1976, the Yearbook was dedicated to her in recognition of her unwavering commitment.

After retiring from a distinguished teaching career, Mary continued to serve her community as a member of the Plattsmouth Board of Education from 2002 to 2018, where she held the position of secretary for many years. Her leadership and dedication to education were recognized with the Nebraska School Board Association Level VII Award in 2018.

Mary's influence extended far beyond her direct teaching duties. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Women Educators Sorority for 50 years, earning Hall of Fame membership in 1998. Her contributions included serving as state treasurer and fulfilling the role of Nebraska state president from 2002-2004, as well as the International vice president, supporting eleven states and Canadian provinces from 2007-2009.

In recognition of her committed service to the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival, Mary was honored as a Lady of the Realm and served as the Grand Marshal of the Kiddie's Parade in 2014, an acknowledgment of her many years of dedication to the community. Furthermore, her involvement in high school athletics at the state level included assisting with the Nebraska State Track Meet from 1982 to 2012, and the State Wrestling Meet from 1981 to 1998. In 2011, she received the Distinguished Service to Youth Award, and in 2008, she was named a Friend of High School Athletics by the Nebraska Coaches Association.

Mary also dedicated her time to the University of Nebraska, serving as a UNL Track Official from 2001 to 2018 and a host for visiting volleyball tournament teams from 2007 to 2021.

Mary is survived by her husband Charles Caverzagie of Plattsmouth, sons, Kevin (Karen) Caverzagie of Papillion and Kelly (Robyn) Caverzagie of Omaha, grandchildren, Brady (Brianna) Caverzagie, Chase (Maddie) Caverzagie, Kyler (Andrea) Caverzagie, Caden (Julia) Caverzagie, Trevin Caverzagie, Micah Caverzagie, Langdon Caverzagie and Mitchell Caverzagie, and a great granddaughter Clara Caverzagie.
