Millard J. Carnes, age 78, of Plattsmouth, NE, passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 25, 2024, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Millard was born on September 11, 1945, in Aurora, NE, to Elmo K. and Elinor E. (Gorham) Carnes.
Millard graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1963. He furthered his education at Norfolk Junior College, earning an associates degree in Tool & Dye. His passion for education led him to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Vocational Education. Millard dedicated a significant portion of his career to Southeast Community College, where he served as an instructor and Program Chair until his retirement.
Millard's love story with Janice began at a PEER Ministry Divorce and Widowed Support Ministry. The couple found comfort in each other's company and were united in marriage on October 14, 2000, at the Murray Christian Church. In his retirement years, Millard took on the role of an entrepreneur and owned and operated Carnes Creations. He found joy in his creative pursuits and channeled his talents into various projects.
A master woodworker, Millard's artistic talents extended to the stage, where he showcased his acting and set-building skills at the Lofte Community Theatre. He was a dedicated lover of music, a fervent supporter of Husker football and Mickey Mouse. Together with Jan, Millard explored all 50 states, savoring the joys of travel.
His greatest joys in life were the moments spent with his family and his profound relationship with his Lord and Savior. Millard was an active member of the Murray Christian Church, where he served on the Church Board and held the position of Elder. He was also a member of the Milford Masonic Lodge #30 and a former member of the Cozad Volunteer Fire Department. Millard was part of the first class in Nebraska to become a volunteer EMT.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Carnes of Plattsmouth, NE, children, Michael Carnes of Wayne, NE, Jennifer Canham of Wayne, NE, bonus children, Jody Babcock of Urbandale, IA, Jill (Fred) Rollins of Plattsmouth, NE, Jennifer Zillner of Shawnee, KS, 10 grandchildren, Kylie (Daniel) Negrete, Chase Nelson, Cody (Significant other Miranda) Combs, Josh (Meghan) Zillner, Trevor (significant other Sarah) Babcock, Abby Thurstenson, Will (fiancé Jaime) Babcock, John Millard (fiancé Abby) Canham, Nick Zillner, Carli Canham and great granddaughter Emmalynn Negrete.
He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved dog, Sam.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Murray Christian Church, Murray, Nebraska with Pastor Mike Njus officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with family greeting friends at the Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Murray Christian Church or the Lofte Community Theatre.
