Dorothy (Dottie) Engle, 94, of Plattsmouth, was born and raised in Bailey, North Carolina on a tobacco farm to Dovis and Daisy (Flora) Jordan. She was born into a family of 13. After high school graduation, she went to Washington, D.C. to live with her sister. Afterwards she went to work for NSA (National Security Agency), where she worked for 3 years. It was there she met and married her Air Force Husband, John R. Engle, in Mt. Pleasant Church in Bailey, NC on September 15, 1951. In the next two years, Brenda and Diane were born, and she became a stay at home mother. They were transferred to Germany in 1956 for a 3 year tour of duty. They returned to the US in 1959 to serve at Offutt Air Force Base. In 1960, Melanie was born. Afterwards, our family served 2 years at Westover AFB in Massachusetts (1964-1966), returning to Offutt in 1966 for remaining years.
Dottie has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1961. She worked with the food pantry for more than 25 years. She helped to organize the first food pantry and also worked with operation Christmas for many years. She was a hospice volunteer for 2 years, visited nursing homes, and delivered meals on wheels. She received the "Good Neighbor Award" in 1977.
She loved family, especially her grandkids and great grandkids. She has 12 grandkids and 18 great grandkids. She enjoyed playing softball for many years and was an avid bowler and bridge player.
She is survived by her children, Brenda Schuster, Diane (Sheldon) Roth, Melanie (Zack) Patera; grandkids Chris (Sandy), Johnathan (Brooke) , Jamie (Zac), Alicia (Mike), Laura (Mark), Katie (Ryan), Adam (Victoria), Sarah (Nate), Jared (Sarah), Jill, Andrew (Rachel), and Kory; great-grandkids, Calysta, Berkley, Marlowe, A.J., Gracie, Brooklyn, Malachi, Lexi, Creed, Rosie, Zurie, Samuel, Jordan, Lucas, Harper, Ryder, and Axton; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John R. Engle, great grandson Carson Schuster, brothers, J.D., Johnny, Raymond, Wallace, Jesse, Robert, and sisters, Christine, Beaulah, Pearl, Arlene, Ethel, and Marcell.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Plattsmouth with Rev. Lee Wigert officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 5, 2025 from 9:00 AM until the time of the Service at the Church. Graveside Services will follow lunch at 2:30 PM at the Omaha National Cemetery.
